The terrain solid model was extracted from AutoCAD Civil 3D and scaled to 1:120, also known as TT scale. The model was carved on the FabLab ShopBot using HDU, High Density Urethane foam, laminated to three inches thick. The terrain was finished by sanding, priming and painting.
Next all the objects on the site were extracted from AutoCAD and CADWorx as solids, scaled and modified as needed to optimize printability, 3D printed, and then installed into holes located from the CAD file of the site plan. Finishing details of grass, gravel, trees and shrubs were added using railroad modeling techniques.
The completed model, built by Annette Jennings, is on display in the QPS Engineering lobby.
